After graduating from college in 2007, Salter decided to start fighting as a change of pace from wrestling. He went to Lindenwood University, earning himself a degree in Political Science. He is the holder of a UEP Middleweight title and before starting in the UFC he was an assistant wrestling coach at Thompson High School. Salter also has a purple belt in BJJ and prefers using the triangle as a grapple method.
